- Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) - This is an essential fatty acid and is a building block like Lego that the body converts to the longer chain omega- 3’s like EPA and DHA. However the conversion rate in dogs is low so EPA and DHA are also included in Bone Idol dog food. As an aside cats are practically unable to perform this conversion at all.
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) - may be used to reduce inflammation
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - is used in cell and nerve health
Omega-3 and its benefits
We have all heard about them, but what are they and why are they in our dog food?
Omega- 3 fatty acids are 'essential' because dogs can not produce them in their body and so must be included in their diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are used in maintaining overall heath and wellbeing of your pet and the function of their body.
Here comes a science bit!
Omega-3 are long chains of carbon surrounded by hydrogen and oxygen. Each carbon has 'four hands' to hold onto to the next carbon in the chain ( C-C ) and generally oxygen and/or hydrogen too. Omega-3 fatty acids are different, as some of these carbons form a special double bond with the next carbon in the chain and hold two hands instead of one ( C=C )
Omega-3 is a family of fatty acids that include other names you mad see when researching dog food. These may include:
Fish Oil Benefits
Fish oils are a rich source of EPA and DHA. EPA is converted into anti- inflammatory components, which helps to manage inflammation- based problems such as joint, coat and bladder diseases.
The addition of 2.5% to 3.5% of premium fish oil in our balanced and complete dog food can lead to substantial health benefits for cats and dogs. The role of DHA has a more structural role and is found in high concentrations in nerve tissue such as the brain and eyes.
Puppies and kittens need EPA, in order to feed their growing brains, whilst older pets benefit from DHA, that helps to support their ageing brains.
As high omega- 3 fish oils continue to become popular in pet food, the challenge is to secure raw materials to cater for the growing demand.
At Bone Idol, all of your Grain Free recipes have been formulated with an inclusion of ‘Omega- 3 supplement’ derived from fish oils.
Our fish oils are high quality, responsibly sourced premium oils which are rich in both EPA & DHA. Omega- 3 is added to Bone Idol food to help support healthy skin and coat, whilst also supporting cognitive and visual development.
